But I'm not sure if you'd have time for both Guardsman Pass and the Nebo Loop on your way to Great Basin. It's equal, if not better than driving over Guardsman Pass. The 35 mile Nebo Scenic loop is outstanding and would also be beautiful in late September. There is a scenic loop between Payson UT and Nephi UT. This route, with stop will take you up 7 hours, depending on your stop. There isn't much in the way of services for the next 100 miles to Great Basin. Be sure to gas up and take a rest break when you reach the town of Delta UT. There won't be much in the way of scenic vistas on this route. At Nephi, take highway 50 to Great Basin NP. From Brighton, drive down Big Cottonwood canyon in to the SLC valley and make your way to I-215 westbound. If you're lucky, you may see the resident moose. When you get in to Big Cottonwood Canyon, you can walk the broadwalk/trail around Silver Lake near Brighton ski resort. You'll want to stop at the top of Guardsman Pass for photo ops. Start early from Park City, drive over Guardsman Pass to Big Cottonwood Canyon for fall color, great vistas. This diversion would take you about 2 to 3 hours depending on how much time you spend on Antelope Island. A better alternative would be to drive north on I-15 from SLC to Antelope Island State Park. That said, IMO, this isn't the best place to see the Great Salt Lake for photography. Note - you'll also see the Great Salt Lake from the plane as you come in to SLC. Then double back and head to Park City on I-80. When you leave the airport, go west on I-80 to Great Salt Lake State Park to see the lake. Hopefully, you have an early arrival in SLC. You should probably plan on viewing the Great Salt Lake before you drive up to Park City.
